Yesterday I purchased some heart pine beams-a dining table is priority number one – never having worked with heart pine, given it’s gummy nature I’m not sure what finish should be applied-also, any sanding tips?

I've been playing around with some old pine 1x12's that my great uncle gave me. He said he bought 'em used about 40 years ago. Built a chicken coop out of them, and tore that down a few years ago.
I ran a couple of them thru a planer and then belt sanded with 100. Hand sanded up thru 220. Rubbed in a couple of coats of thinned boiled linseed oil, and the wood is absolutely beautiful. Has a deep reddish mahogany look to it.
On one end of a nearly vertical grained piece, I counted 20 growth rings to an inch.
*Oil like Charlie, with a nice paste wax job to finish.
*Bruce,I would suggest that you seal it with clear shellac, one coat uncut should do it. Level using 180 or 220 grit aluminum oxide sandpaper. You could use a 2lb cut clear shellac for the finish coats (5), sanding with 400 - 600 grit silicon wet/dry paper (lubricated) and then rub out to the desired sheen. Or, for a more durable final finish, use a wipe on poly such as Min Wax, at least six coats, scuffing with 400 grit silicon wet/dry (unlubricated) between each coat. Min Wax Wipe On Poly is available in a satin and gloss. Done correctly, you should not have to rub out.I make this suggestion because I have run across recycled pine (Doug Fir) over 100 years old that still had pitch in the boards. FWIW.Dano
