I have been woodworking for quite a few years and have had differing opinions about final finishing. I always thought that the true highlight of a finish was the top of the table or the front of a highboy. All the articles I read seem to emphasize the tops. Either with shellac lacquer and nothing about the sides or legs. So, what do you think?

Tops, or fronts are the most visible and hence why the most effort is lavished. But sides, legs, etc. still get similar treatment, though it's not uncommon to be so careful to fill all the pores on such surfaces, and to be sure French polishing may give way to padded shellac rubbed to a high sheen. But in any event it is all about individual preferences, not something with hard rules. French polish the underside of the table top if you wish.
The top or front surface is the first area viewed therefore it is important to polish it more so then the other areas.
Lacquer is a good choice for the finial finish if you are rubbing up to a gloss.

SA
