I recently worked with this wood for the first time myself. It gives off a weird spicy smell that some people have a nasty reaction to. I put some Tried and True Danish or varnish oil (cant remember which) followed a day later with some shellac. I used it for a handle on a double bladed inlay knife, so I certainly didnt use much, but it looked very nice when finished.
*Rob, thats nice to know, i just got some tried and true (original finish)with the beeswax.. will try on some scraps first, I also got they're shellac kit. might try them both on it. I've used varnish and oil before on other projects. Allways looking for the best results with some ease to it. Jeff Jewitt's (sp)new finish book is a great read. I have to say i find finishing the hardest part to attain that PERFECT look!
*I don’t know enough about cocobola, but my guess is that the oils in it will prevent lacquer and varnish from drying. Another thing I don’t know about, is the beeswax finish, but I doubt that shellac will stick after you apply the beeswax, so you may want to try a sample first.
*Wax only. It's all a wood like COCOBOLO needs and will look great to boot......
*I won't touch that stuff (cocobola) with a 10 foot pole. A neighbor of mine was playing around with it and a couple of days later he looked like he had a case of poison ivy. There is a web site that someone posted that tells you all of this type of info.I think this is it.www.mendelu.cz/user/horacek/toxic.htm?
