I have been asked to turn a large ash tray for a cigar-loving friend. I am looking for suggestions of a finish which will withstand the obvious high heat that will be needed in an ash tray.
Thanks, Jim

Ten years ago I did a bunch of custom furniture for an office. The local fire marshal insisted that all of it be coated with a fire-retardant finish. I found such a beast (at Sherwin Williams) and used it, but I was not pleased with the results. It looked as though I'd sprayed everything with diluted white glue. Perhaps they've improved that product since then, but you might want to consider having a tin-knocker make a liner of pewter or copper.
*A great idea, if I can't find a finish as tough as I need it.Thanks!Jim
*This may sound crazy, but have you considered the 'no finish at all' treatment. If you think about it, probably no finish will work anyway in the long run. Sliante.
*I am considering using Florida Rosewood for this project. It's an oily wood, just like the other rosewoods you've heard of and used. I'll have to do a hot-cigar test, I guess. Thanks for your suggestion for a "no-finish" finish.Jim
