i am doing some work in my house and i just finished sanding a window and it’s trim, which is chestnut. the house is was built c.1930 and i was wondering what type of finish was common for the time. any advice would be great. thanks for your time. mike

Shellac was a very common finish for the time. Orange shellac now called amber is what was often used.
You may consider putting on a couple of coats of the shellac, to enhance the color of the wood and then top coating with an oil based varnish.
This is to protect the shellac from ammonia based cleaners. Ammonia will promptly remove unprotected shellac.
