Hi, I have a couple of nail holes and knot holes in some black walnut wood I have been working with. I have tried PLASTIC WOOD color WALNUT but when it dries it is to light colored. Any suggestions on other brands anyone has used that have a much better match? I thought I read once that you can mix some sawdust of that wood with something else to get an exact match? Thanks

Jeff,
I just finished a project using black walnut and it too had some small knots, blemishes, etc. Yes, you can mix sanding dust (not sawdust) and glue that drys clear, mix together and stuff in the hole.....you can also mix the sawdust with shellac and apply that way. I left mine alone and just sanded smooth because ficing it would have made more obvious, or at least the same, as it is now.
thanks bg will give it a shot with the clear glue and sand dust.
Many high quality paint stores have a product in small plastic jars that work well for objects that can handle a softer putty. It comes in about 10 different colors; is oil based, and stays flexible for quite a long time. I have uses it with success on several furniture pieces. I think it goes by the name of "Color putty".
Hello
I use the sawdust idea, except I use whatever finish I am useing as a bonder(not glue). in that way I know everything will match whin the finish is applied.
Ive used glue in the past, and the match isnt always the same as the finnish, somethimes the glue wont take the finish and than you are stuck with a blemish you were not ready for.

I've tried about every glue and sawdust mix I've ever heard about; sawdust and shllac, too. I've never used such a recipe that made me even a little bit happy.
I use a product from a company called PL, http://www.stickwithpl.com. Works great; on a large fill, you have to apply a couple or more times, but it's my favorite by far. If nothing else, they have the best color matching, and a good color selection, too.

My students use lots of walnut since it is common in my area. The best fix I've seen is to mix up some clear epoxy to fill the holes. It will sand down even and turn clear with your finish, and basically lets the color of the wood show through the hole. use a slow setting epoxy, though. And try to mix it without creating too many bubbles in it.
Try it. You'll like it. ;-)
