I am looking for info on a fabric to use other than FELT for the back and but rest for open gun case made of knotty alder.
The concern is for oil, not wanting the case to be only for show guns will be in and out , work table is in same room to wipe guns down prior to going in and the barrel rest will be of hard maple. Ruled out leather and animal hide. Would like some advice on material as well as install info Thanks mrsidejob

What is the problem with felt? What ever material you choose, it must either absorb or not aborb oil. If latter the implication is that oil will be left on the surface.
You can fasten the fabric of choice with either hot glue or contact cement .
I previously made travel cases for marlin fishing gear. While the cases where aluminum with machine aluminum mounting hardware. I used Cordura, that was held in place by 3m spray adhisive. You have not made mention of what type of padding for the inside.
You might take a look at some of the ultra suede's there are some great products out there, the one I looked at was very nice but costly, try some of the higher end fabric stores. I got mine at Britex in San Francisco.
