What is the formula or standard for determining the style size of a wood door when
installing a mortise door lock ( 4″ deep, 6″ long, 15/16″ wide) 2 3/4″ set back ?

Modern exterior doors are 1 3/4" thick but 2 1/4" thick is also a standard thickness, common on older doors, and the extra wood makes for sturdier mortise walls.
I would make the stile wide enough to leave a full 1/2" of wood past the end of the lock mortise, not forgetting to allow for the depth of any grooves for floating panels along the inside edge of the stile.

Thanks for your reply, I decided to use a 5 1/2" style so I should be fine. Using the
5 1/2", places the lockset setback in the center of the style. Looks good!
Thanks again
