My wife purchased an old school desk (cast iron legs and wooden seat and desk top) that she want to use to put plants on outside on a covered porch. Everything has been painted with a gloss white paint, but I am unsure if it is an interior or exterior paint. She wants to put a varnish over all of the wood surfaces to protect it from the weather. Is there a recommended exterior sealer that can go over paint? If so, what should be done to prepare the paint for the sealer?

Exterior
I would just give it a light hand sanding, wash it down with spirits, and go over it with a good quality exterior white gloss paint.

Any varnish you put on it will just turn a little yellowish with age. If she likes the worn look that is on it, you could probably just go with it as is. The worst that could happen is you have to repaint it. on a covered porch is should be fine as is.
Exterior Finish over Paint
Thanks for the advice. My wife likes the distressed look, so she is going to try it as is and watch to see how it responds to the humidity and sun. If it doesn't hold up, I think she will either varnish it or paint it.
