A quick Internet search for "exotic wood" will turn up lots of sources. I restrict my shopping to those with Internet stores that have pictures for each item for sale. This is a much shorter list! My favorite store for highly figured domestic woods is http://www.nwtimber.com. They have a fantastic Internet store, great products and service. For more exotic woods I like http://www.gilmerwood.com. They have a great selection and service but not as good of a web site as nwtimber. If you find a prospect on their site be sure to bookmark the page because you may never find the item again. Others that I have bookmarked but have no experience with are:
http://www.pinecreekwood.com/
http://www.hearnehardwoods.com/
http://www.bellforestproducts.com/
There are a couple ebay stores that may work but when I am ready to buy, I don't want to mess with auctions. The ones I found are:
http://www.stores.ebay.com/Cook-Woods
http://www.shop.ebay.com/merchant/hibdonwood_W0QQ_nkwZQQ_armrsZ1QQ_fromZQQ_mdoZ
http://www.shop.ebay.com/merchant/westpennwood_W0QQ_nkwZQQ_armrsZ1QQ_fromZQQ_mdoZ
Good luck and great shopping.
Thanks for your reply...I guess I should have said a bit more in my oriiginal question than I did...Going to the internet can be an imposing task.....All the hits but who among them is reputable....Thanks for sharing those you have personal experience with....That counts for a lot....John
Rick Hearne is my favorite timber merchant.

As a fellow Montana woodworker, without knowing what part of the state you are in, here is what I know for hardwood dealers in Montana. Wilsor Plywood in Great Falls, Helena Hardwoods in Helena, Superior in Missoula. I have purchased wood at each of these locations. There is also a large hardwood dealer in Billings (checkout woodfinder.com). They all have some exotics.
Hope this helps. If you need more info. on any of these let me know. Also, for small amounts of exotics have you looked at ebay?
