Gang:
I guy I work with offered to sale me 100bft of South American Maple. He brought in a small piece and it looks alot like ash. Has anyone ever heard of of this specie before? It smells a little like red oak. It is creamy white in appearance and has a tight grain with a pore structure a bit like mohogany.
Any info you can provide would be helpful to me. Thanks a ton!
Thank you,

A google search for "south american maple" will find you several descriptions of Balforodendron riedelianum, otherwise known as Pau Marfim, Ivory Maple, Ivorywood and Guatambu. As well, "A Guide to the Useful Woods of the World" edited by Flynn and Holder has a two page article on it written by Jon Arno. The book is available through the IWCS website (http://www.woodcollectors.org).

Thanks for the info. Since posting my original question, I did a google search and found some info on it. The guy I work with has now agreed to gove the wood at no charge....I can't pass up free lumber. Looks like it will work out just fine.
Thanks again,
