Hello all,
I am installing a couple of half-mortise locks and purchased flush escutheons from Horton Brasses. Very nice pieces of work they are, but I had a question for anyone out there with flush-escutcheon experience. They came with two very small nails each, and the holes for the nails are bored through the brass at the top and bottom of the escutcheon going vertically up and down respectively, into the wood. Now how on God’s green earth are you supposed to get something inside the escutcheon to nail in the nail? I thought of a nail-set, but even that seems unweildly as the hardware itself is only 11/16th of an in. high. Any ideas? I could call Horton but I thought I might find some good tips here, thanks!

I have used a few of the escutcheons you are referring to, and you can insert the pins at a slight angle, which will give you the ability to drive the them with a nail set. To tell the truth, I have only used the pins once, instead I aim for a press fit that will hold the piece in place without any fasteners. If the escutcheon is not already filed to a slight taper, I do this and carefully scribe around it, chisel out the waste and use a scrap block and a C-clamp to squeeze the escutcheons in place.
