I’m planning to make some endgrain cutting boards for Christmas presents. I’d like to choose a nice contrasting wood to go with hard maple. Any suggestions?

I've always liked cherry and maple together.

I like purpleheart with hard maple. They have similar properties.
Walnut provides strong contrast. I haven't make endgrain cutting boards but maple and walnut look great in flat or quartersawn cutting boards.
I made a bunch of Jatoba and maple and then some purpleheart and maple boards last year and let people pick. The Jatoba and Maple was the big 'seller'.The Jatoba is about as hard as the maple and in Dallas is actually cheaper than hard maple.
