I am considering purchasing a Powermatic edge sander and would like to know if anyone else has used one and what you think. They are really cheap right now and I need one to sand bamboo ply (Plyboo) as I am tired of doing it by hand. Any experiences would be appreciated. Aloha, mike

Mike,
Just make sure you test drive it first. I like my Grizzly but the table flexes. It's really annoying...

NOT fighting you..
Just a real question..
Why would a edge sander work better than a good (long bed planner or a good router table and good fence????
EDIT:: Stupid me.. I just re-read and saw bamboo ply !

Why would a edge sander work better than a good (long bed planner or a good router table and good fence????I have those, Will. Oliver 12 inch with 108 bed and lots-o-routers. The Plyboo burns with even a sharp blade. Sanding is the only way for this stuff. Aloha, mike
There are a couple things I look for in an edge sander. Belt oscillation and unlimited length. The Powermatic has neither of these. The dust collection chute is in the way for pieces that are longer than the table and the belt just goes around. The better sanders, Crouch, Ritter, are quite a bit more money but you get what you pay for.
Beat it to fit / Paint it to match
I bought the Powermatic a few years ago, and I must say I like it a lot.
It didn't exactly fill a "critical need" for me, so I was unwilling to spend the $$ for an oscillating machine.
The dust collection is not great, so I made a simple box from thin aluminum sheet stock, which I fitted on the end, and now it does fine.
I certainly wouldn't say it is a must have machine, but if you have everything else you really need, it's nice to have around. I certainly find myself using it a lot.

Thanks Nikki, I am looking at the oscillator model 80. Its really cheap at 899.00 and I need something to do the work on the Plyboo. I think I will go for it. I'll let you know what I think after it arrives. Aloha, mike
That's a good price; I can't remember exactly, but I paid something like $650 for the straight model. But burning is a problem, and if you are going to make heavy use of the machine, the oscillating action would be worth the extra $$.********************************************************
