Just got some Maple edgebanding for a cabinet project. The banding has a pre-glued back, but I was wondering what the best method for applying it is. I just ironed on a test piece on scrap and it seemed to be fine (used cotton setting with steam). Is there a better way?

I assume you are edgebanding plywood. I have never had a problem with a 3/4" but 1.5" edge I have had it release over time.
I usually start at one edge and get it down so it doesn't move and then do the rest. Once I have it all down I quickly go over the whole length 5 or 6 times quickly and then press down with a block of wood or J roller.
Watch the edges along the length sometimes have to go over them again.
Your method should work just fine.

Yes, your method is fine. Just make sure that you press it down good and well with a not-hot tool (wood block, roller, etc). Mind the direction of the grain when you trim it flush.
