Hi all,
I won the auction on a couple of nice planes (I hope) on ebay this weekend and I can’t wait for them to get here, so I had to at least talk about them.
They both look like they are type 16’s that are in good shape with plenty of life left in the irons. They will be user planes, not decorations. We could all get some really nice planes for good prices if the displayers would quit driving the market. But, to each his own.
The first is a #5 that looks really nice with a tight, chip free mouth. I paid pennies over $30 for it. I should receive that one in a couple days. The second is a #3 that also looks to be in good shape. That one cost all of $32. Unfortunately, that seller doesn’t take paypal, so I have to snail mail him a check and wait for it to clear before he ships the plane(rolls eyes). Hopefully I will get it in a couple of weeks.
Here are some pics.

Woops, I attatched one of the pics twice. Sorry

Those are nice planes at really good prices. You should be able to get years of service out of them. Congratulations

Nice score. When you fettle the bottom of the #3, (just in case you didn't know) rotate it every couple of minutes. Those short, skinny ones are easy to rock a little, and put to much pressure on one side or the other. Otherwise, it'll get out of square to the sides in a big hurry......ask me how I know! Next thing you know, you're left with a skewed scrub plane.

Thanks for the tip Jeff. I'll keep it in mind. That way when I screw it up I'll know what happened. :^)

I miss my #3. I sold a 603 last year thinking I wouldn't miss it, with all the other smoothers I own (all #4 size or larger), but I was wrong. I loved that little plane for edging small parts, 1/2" wide stock on edge, etc....
I hope you have years of good service from them. They look quite nice.

Rob,
Nice catch! They look to be in really good shape. Looks like the original owner took good care of them. Best of luck with them.
Are these your first planes or adding to your herd?

Bob,
I spent most of the day Sunday on eBay looking for planes in good shape that weren't bid into the stratosphere and then getting into the bidding. I got the #5 today and it is in great shape! The iron even has a decent edge on it.
These aren't my first planes, but I am just now getting serious about using them more often. On my last project I kept running into situations where I thought..."Man, if I had a good, sharp plane this would be a lot easier, and the project would turn out better for it". So this time I will have them.
