Maybe this should be in the tools section, but it is also of general interest. I came across it today and had to pick up my jaw off the floor. The item is a set of hand tools including seven (7) LN planes. If I could only get SWMBO to let me bid on this. At least I’ll watch it and cry when someone else buys it.

Paul,
That is really sweet! I'd bet even money that the winning bid will be closer to $3K than $2K.

Paul,
Several studies of bidding on e-bay have shown that prices almost always go well beyond what the same item would go for in a smaller auction, and often times well beyond any rational estimate of the item's worth.
Primarily this is caused by the huge number of bidders that e-bay attracts. With a vast pool of bidders, you can almost always be guaranteed that there will be at least a few people bidding who have more money than common sense, or who have caught "auction fever" and simply won't give up and allow themselves to be outbid.
My guess is that these tools will go for pretty close to their full retail value if they were bought new, maybe even more.
I gave up doing auctions when I saw used Craftsman power tools, that were only a few years old, selling for more than the identical new tool would cost in a Sear's store. E-bay is great for sellers but generally isn't as good a deal for buyers.

I've no argument there; items like planes are always bid up to unreasonable levels, presumably by the many ill informed collectors.
This collection, however, seemed quite nice and worth drawing others' attention to, if only to see a nice collection. I am not recommending to anyone to pay over-retail prices for the pieces in the collection. I am recommending looking and salivating...
Iv'e watched e-bay auctions for many, many Bridge City tools and the prices do get above the new tool price. Howevere, collectors do want specific tools. I agree with one of your other writers....bidding fever overtakes common sense.

eBay has been bery bery good to me for buying FWW back issues and NFL tickets. Haven't tried to buy tools and machinery is usually to far away to ship and still have a good deal. I often shop "Buy it Now" items and have gotten many far better deals there than from local retailers. John O'Connell - JKO Handcrafted Woodworking

We trained hard, but it seemed that every time we were beginning to form up into teams, we would be reorganized. I was to learn later in life that we tend to meet any new situation by reorganizing; and a wonderful method it can be for creating the illusion of progress while producing confusion, inefficiency, and demoralization.
