Has anyone sold any wood working equipment on ebay. Did you get what you thought you would for it? Is it worth the hassle? Is it a hassle to sell something and deal with the buyer?

I have sold a few woodworking items on Ebay ( along with nearly 400 other things). I would say, that you will get a fair price for your items on Ebay. Sometimes I get outstanding prices for things I sell, in fact I've only been unhappy with the final sale price on less than half a dozen things. I think Ebay is great.
Ive always thought ebay to be nice (ive bought, not sold). If youre area isnt prone to produce local results then ebay is a nice way to buy/sell some items.
the only problem i think youd have with woodworking genre is if the item youre selling cant be shipped via UPS/FedEx/USPS with ease or hastle(oversize). I dont think id be wanting to mess with the hastle of say selling a cabinet saw or lathe. But id sell hand tools there.
I want to sell a router table I bought its the Rock Sold that MLCS is selling. its kind of heavy and bulky. I really dont know where to sell it at and get a fair price for it. Darkworksite4: When the job is to small for everyone else, Its just about right for me"
Id see if your local hardwood store had a bulletin board that allowed some customers to place little ads.
If you have a box, go ahead and box it up take it to a shipper and weigh it, measure it and look at prices to ship.
Then place it on Ebay and see what happens.
Ron, I've sold a number of tools on eBay, including a small router table, stories to follow, however, why not list the router table here at Knots in the classifieds section, and at the Wood classified site (email me for link if you can't find it). Your disadvantage in trying to sell it on eBay is that it sounds like you have no "track record" as a seller. Beginning sellers are sometimes at a disadvantage.
Now, for the stories, the router table was a bit of a pain to pack, and it was a very small bench-top version. The funniest sell was an old Craftsman lathe sans motor. Packing it in a box was not an option, so I wrapped it head-to-tail with bubble wrap and tons of tape, with a box over the delicate end, and put the shipping tag in the middle, where the metal was exposed. It looked like Snoopy! The Post Office took it, shipped it and it arrived in great shape! The look on the clerk's face when I lifted it up onto the counter was priceless!
The biggest disaster was a 1950's Craftsman table saw. Was told by the FedEx Ground 1-800 operators that I could ship it by taking it to a drop point that's a 45 minute drive from my home. Got it all packed (like 4 boxes), toted it out there, and was told by the manager that I couldn't ship it! I was furious, but there was nothing I could do. Had to bring it back and ship it via the Post Office. Cost me a fortune, the buyer shared a bit of the cost, but not much, as I had already quoted a shipping price.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
I'd be interested in the link to the classified section.$ Bill
Hi Bill, it's http://www.woodmagazine.com/classifieds/
For some reason, the PTB at Wood mag make this area very hard to find! I have it bookmarked.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)

Seems to me that a classified area thats hard to find is not much of an attraction for the seller! :-)

Loring, I agree! I've been meaning to send a complaint, but just haven't taken the time to do it. Perhaps there's a link in a prominent place that I just haven't seen because I rarely go to the higher level pages. Just have the discussions bookmarked. Anway, free is free.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Hi FG,
Tryed the sight, and had a hard time looking at the ads. I clicked on an item, and a window would pop up for a second and then disappear!
I wish telemarketers would do that - LOL
Peter
Peter, I've not had that problem. Do you have "Pop-up Killer" or some other utility installed to stop pesky ads? That could cause a problem. Try going to the wood discussions and clicking on a thread, and then clicking on a response to the thread. Those come in new windows also -- see if they work.
Perhaps there's a setting in your browser that needs to be changed?forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
FG,
Thanks. when I shut the popup killer it worked fine. I appreciate the tip.

I've sold some Stanley tools, mostly planes, and have always been very happy with the prices realized. It seems to me that A LOT of people are looking for Stanley items, especially the older ones, and are willing to pay a lot for a tool. Even tools which need quite a bit of work to be fine users will fetch a high price. My highest profit so far has been 1000% (that absolutley shocked me). I always try to describe my tools in great detail, and rate them according to the Fine Tool Journal Condition Classification for Antique Hand Tools (it's in the back of every FTJ issue). That way buyers have a benchmark for comparison and hopefully realize they are buying from someone who knows what he is talking about, not just an antiques dealer who found this tool in a box and is dumping it off. Just remember, always be honest in your description of the tool and you'll be fine.
Ron,
I have bought too many items to mention on ebay. I have been happy with most everything but you do have to watch out. I bought a stanley plane that was reported to be corrugated. It was a fake. Someone had ground grooves into the bottom(really made me mad). The seller was good about a refund but I was really disapointed. As for selling, I can't seem to find anyone who is willing to pay what I think is fair. Last month I put 7 Amana router bits up for sale. 5 new, 2 used. All i got was $10 and an idiot that didn't look at the picture. He gave me negative feedback because 2 of the new bits were missing the guide bearings although I clearly showed the bits. He even refused a refund!!! I will stick to buying and leave the selling to others.
