Hi all,
Question on dust fouling and clogging my oil burner. I spent $350 on getting my Beckett oil burner cleaned out last fall, it was so dirty it couldn’t fire up. I have pretty decent dust collection, too. My oil burner man says the burner needs access to outside air. A duct would run from the outside to some kind of gizmo that is installed between the burner and the warm air furnace. Anybody have experience with this problem and is it a diy project? I’d much rather spend the $600 I was quoted on tools and FWW books.
Thanks for any help,
Tom

Tom,
Take a look at the manual for your furnace. I just put a new furnace in a couple of years ago and hooking up a combustion air intake from the outside is as simple as making a 2" pvc pipe connection, running it through a rim joist to the outside and putting a critter screen over the end. Effectively, the unit is already set up for it.
On an older furnace it may not be so configured and some special configurations may have to be made. That could get complex and I would imaging you would have to know what you are doing there.
My advise would be to check the manual. If the unit is already set up for it, do it yourself. If it's not pre-configured, and you're not sure exactly what to do, let a profesional handle it.
Good luck.

If possible I would wall it in, supply combustion air from outside and ventilate the heat build up(in the confined space) to the rest of the basement. However, There are very strict formulas and regulation on the size of the air intake and the position of the ventilation of the confined space.Get the combustion air wrong and you may wind up dead!Basically the sizes are determined by the btu of the furnace.
