How effective is 8″ insulated flex duct between the blower and filter for reducing dust collector noise? If the flex duct were 6′ long, would the flow restriction be a concern on a 5 hp unit?

Wrap a blanket around the pipe that is there now to see if it will have an effect, but I suspect that it will not make much difference.
Also insulated flex duct for HVAC is fairly flimsy, isn't designed for the pressure and velocity in the the pipe between the blower and the filter, it will probably fail quickly.

John,I was curious about experience people had with the flex duct because you never know how well it will work until you try it. It would be the easiest muffler to make. I don't have concerns about the durability of the flex duct, but since I made the first post I have been leaning towards a muffler design similar to the one on the Bill Pentz webpage. The flex duct with a shell around it would probably work fine, but I think I would rather go with the other design for less restriction. You are right, a blanket around the pipe won't help, unless the pipe is hard mounted to the blower housing, then it will only help a little. The main noise comes from the filter, so a muffler is needed to absorb it before it gets there.
