Is it more effective to collect fine dust from a lathe using a high volume low pressure extractor or a low volume high pressure extractor? I use an ambient air filter and a powered dust mask but would like to capture as much as possible of the really fine dust at source.

It is very hard to capture the dust being thrown off of a lathe. You need to get as much air as possible flowing over the cutting area so you want a high volume air flow attached to a hood or shroud that keeps the airflow confined to the area right around the cutting or sanding zone.
