I am doing a mahogany butlers pantry with birdseye maple counters (solid) and I need a durable finish. It would have to be water and alcohol resistant. Any suggestions? Thanks, Bob R

For non-professional use, nothing will beat an interior, oil based polyurethane varnish. An alternative is Behlen's Rockhard.Howie.........

Hi Bob. Hood Finishing Products' "Polyshield" is the most durable finish, second only to Polyester. I always use it on countertops.

If you want the maximum protection possible, use a penetrating epoxy primer and then apply varnish (as recommened by the other posters). The epoxy gets deeper into the wood and then bonds with the varnish, so you end up with a very stable surface. Try CPES Multiprime from Smith & Co. The drawback is this stuff is extremely nasty to use - it has a very high proportion of volatile solvent, which stinks and isn't good for you. Use with lots of ventilation, and a respirator wouldn't be a bad idea.
