I am currently designing a gate for my driveway. As usual I research the internet for ideas. During my extensive browsing I happened apon Charles Prowell Woodworks and was very impressed. After reading his section on joinery and learning they do not disclose their joint of choice I just had to know. So, do any of you know what it is?

Mortise And Tenon
Mortise and tenon would be the only way to go for such work. Dowels just don't have enough mass to carry the loads, and full size tenons will easily do the job. Large heavy work has always been mortised & tenoned (timber frames) for the last several hundred years.
If the gates are large enough - span-wise, we add a center core of steel to stiffen everything. If we don't add steel, we peg all the tenons since they have to work in tension, withdrawl and shear.
Some thought should be given to shedding water, with no flat horizontal places for it to sit and work its way into the assembly.
