DRILL PRESS MOTOR HUMS BUT DOES NOT WORK
I turned on my drill press this morning and heard a humming sound, but the motor shaft did not turn. After about ten seconds the drill press short-circuited. I reset the circuit and turn the drill press on again only to have the same result.
The drill press (from Taiwan) has operated dependably without incident for over twenty years. I am a bit ignorant on electric motors so any help would be appreciated.

Check the starting capacitor
It will be under the bulging sheet metal cover that is screwed on to the side of motor. I have assumed you have checked all the connections at plugs and motor junction box. Short the two terminals of the capacitor with a screwdriver to insure it is discharged before handling. Capacitors are cheap so just replace it and see if it works. If not get someone who knows how to read a meter to test the connections. You will need to get the info off the tag to match it with a new one if you need to replace the motor.
I guess I also have to state the obvious in this day and absurd age- Make sure you unplug it first, and don't stand in a partially filled aquarium while doing electrical work...

Hmmmmm...............was it a tune you recognized?
Did your drill press, perhaps, ask you to dance?
Post a sound bite and I bet I can name the tune in 8 notes............
