I’m in the process of setting up my first shop and am currently considering which drill press to buy. I leaning toward a radial arm drill press; they seem much more versatile. What’s your thinking on this? Also, a question I am now pondering is whether to go with a bench top or floor model. I am fortunate to have plenty of shop space so that is not an issue. Is the modest cost difference worth it when buying a floor model? What other advantages/disadvantages to either? Thanks for any help.

Versatility in a woodworking machine, from my experience, is a doubled edged sword. Yes, you can do many things with the machine. But will it do all of these jobs equally well? For woodworking, a radial arm drill press is a luxury and not usually needed. If you spend big bucks you can get one that is quite versatile and accurate. If you don't spend the money, then you'll get something that is versatile and lousy at a variety of jobs. Most drilling jobs can be accomplished with a good floor model drill press. I think that the floor model is worth the extra cost. I don't believe the radial arm is. Good luck.
