Hi Gary,
I want to build a new workbench. The one I have my eye on has half blind dovetails on the corners of the aporns. I have never cut a half blind dovetail and I was wondering if the added thickness (I believe the plans call for 6/4 stock) will make this additionally hard to do. Any suggestions or tips?
Thank you
Tim

Yes Tim. Start small. Practice your dovetailing on thin stock. Learn to cut well before starting on 6/4 stock. You may really do a great job first time out on those 6/4 dovetails but you would then have to be called the dovetailer savant. One of those once in million woodworkers who can do what no one else can.
That being said, if you've cut through dovetails, you'll find that half blind are actually easier. You can hide half your mistakes! Just make sure to undercut just a wee bit on the pin board so your fit is just right.
We will have a dovetailing video coming to the site soon. [You'll have to ask someone who knows, perhaps David Heim. I worked with a student for a day teaching him some dovetailing techniques that worked out pretty well. We filmed it and there's an article coming out in the magazine as well.] Good luck on your project. Gary
