I am very familiar with cherrywood’s darkening properties, But I would like to know what will happen to cherry heartwood over time if it is finished with a “medium to faoirly dark” dye stain? Will it still get deeper in color? Will more “copper red” develop? I would use a pre-cat alkyd resin top coat.
Anybody with experience with this?

Charles,
Even if you use a topcoat or three of marine grade exterior spar varnish or polyurethane that contains UV blockers, it will eventually darken. Exactly how fast, how much, and what it will look like is an impossible question to answer even if one where to see the piece sitting in your shop. We don't even know what species of Cherry you're talking about. I seriously doubt that even Jon could answer this one. When he get's back in the neighbor hood, I'm reasonably sure he will drop by.
