Hey guys,
Finishing up an Arts and Craft piece and thinking of using these butterfly inlays as done on these stickly doors…but I got to thinking…don’t these cause cross grain conflicts? …Or am I worrying too much as they are pretty small.

Yep - too small a cross-grain section to sweat it. Tee it up.
FWIW - last time I used keys, I took like an 8" - 10" piece of wood, and cut the key shape lengthwise on the TS. I left maybe 1/2" above and below the ends of the keys, so there would be a always be a flat surface against the fence. After the key shape was cut, then I laid the stick flat and cut these extras off. Just a quick touch with a chisel to clean up the inside corners. Miter guage to slice off the individual keys and I got a nice set, all exactly the same, nice clean surfaces to inset. Plus - I've got some leftover - assuming I ever want pieces that size and that wood (ebony).
Of course butterflys cause cross-grain conflicts. That's their purpose.
sap,
Hate those rabble-rousing butterflies. Always with the conflict. Why can't they just get along?
