I have a client who has a bed where the finish needs touching up. How can you tell what kind of finish it has? I’d hate to put polyurethane on it only to have it peal or flake off.

I have a finish indicator that indicates broad categories
- NC or catalyzed lacquer
- Oil based varnish
- Everything else (2K, etc.)
or you can try various solvents and see what softens it

That said, if it's a factory finish in the last 50 years, it's probably a lacquer. I work on new furniture every day and see non-lacquer about a handful of times a year.
I might hate to put polyurethane on it for any reason, other than if it was already there. ;o)
