I made a red oak headboard about 15 years ago, and one of the boards has developed a dark brown, almost black, stain along the grain in one place. I have also noticed this happening in a red oak vanity cabinet door of about the same age. The stain seems to be embedded in the grain. Can you tell me what’s going on? Can the discoloration be removed? And is there any way to look at a board and tell that this might happen down the road, or any way to prevent it? Does the same thing happen in white oak?
Thanks,
Tim

Tim,
Tough question to lend an answer to.
What did you finish it with? Has any water gotten to it? Did you maintain it with any type of polish, cleaner etc.?
It could be a mineral streak. Getting something out that is under a finish usually requires stripping.
White oak has a much tighter grain than red oak so the character from the beginning will be totally different.
