I am back again with good news.
We finished off the much discussed table top about a week ago.
Thanks to Rich 14 – Howard Acheson and others for the valuable advice and tips.
Here is what we did.
- After spraying the last coat of lacquer we set the top aside.
- We waited about five weeks, being busy with other stuff.
- In the interim time we ordered supplies for the job.
- At start-up we started hand buffing with 600 grit, went to 1200 then to 2500 and finished with 6000.
- Last we buffed it with a power buffer at slow speed with 3M Imperial 06011 microfinishing compound liquid.
- The result was almost too shiny so we dulled it a bit with a 4000 mesh cloth.
- When all that was done we hand rubbed it with wax as a last measure. I don’t know why we did that. But it impressed my assistant (our daughter), so it was worth it.
Once again – thank you, all of you guys, for helping us.
Now i shall see if i can manage to attach a picture of the table top in question.

Beautifully done, Stig.
Stunning !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
One question ! Are the diamonds pointing at a mother-of-pearl inlay? If so, I think that was a brilliant touch.
Work Safe, Count to 10 when your done for the day !!

Bruce. Thank you for the nice comment.
Yes, the large diamond is pointing at the small oval space where the flowers meet in a curl. We got the mother of pearl from a guy in Maui HI. The company name is Maui Blue. The material is real mother of pearl that is legally harvested from a dump where the county put refuse from the beaches. They sort out the shells and process them into flakes that then are bonded somehow. The result is rectangular plates of fantastic colors and pattern. It is used mainly by guitar builders.
Glad you liked our table top, keep in touch.
Cordially Stig.
You da man!THAT is nice!Rich
Well Rich, that is what happens when a guy, (like me) ask for advice and gets it from men like you and others. Your suggestions were followed. From now on I will use gloss lacquer that I rub down. If the sheen is too high it is easy to dull it a bit.
Looking back at all this it is very straight forward and simple once the mystery is gone.
Thanks again.
Stig.
