I’ve been contemplating buying a jointer. I’ve read a lot of the posts on Knots about different jointers and the reviews on Amazon. A local tool shop was selling the Delta x5 6 inch jointer on closeout for $460. That seemed like a great deal based on the other jointers I’ve seen (Steel City around $700 to $1000; longer bed Powermatic at $950 and Jet in the mid $600 range). The price of the Delta on Amazon is $649. The Rigid at HD is $400 but seems like a much less robust machine.
Is this a good deal? Anything I should be concerned about in buying the x5 on closeout? The salesman indicated it still had a 5 year warranty. .

I would strongly recommend an 8" jointer. Wider cut, longer bed, more mass. No concerns with buying it on closeout, but you can buy a for $410

or a Grizzly 8" for $650

I don't have any personal experience with Grizzly, but haven't heard anything but praise about the quality and customer service. I would not hesitate to buy a Grizzly tool.

Sure wish Grizzley would sell into Canada
I know. I can go down there, but I'm worried about the tarriffs coming back! And Craftex just isn't up to Grizzly's standards.Chris @ http://www.flairwoodworks.com and http://www.flairwoodwork.spaces.live.com)

Wee-hour boat trips worked for Canadian whiskey coming this direction. Not that I would advocate such lawlessness, of course. '=)
Ralph,I, personally, wouldn't feel comfortable sitting in a little row boat across from a 600lb bandsaw.Chris @ http://www.flairwoodworks.com and http://www.flairwoodwork.spaces.live.com)

I have one and it is doing great. I got it about 6 years ago, only problem is the switch went bad last week, new one on order. Other that that no complaints. I have moved 3 times with it and if the movers can't break it it will last for a while.

I have one and I like it a lot. Temper that by realizing that it is the first jointer i have owned so my opinion is worth what you are paying for it.
