I have a Delta model 14-651 1/2 HP hollow chisel mortiser (benchtop) that I have used for about 2 years. Overall, as a benchtop model for occasional use it has performed decently. Today, the arm seemed to become disconnected somehow from the rack and pinion mechanism which raises and lowers the chisel/cutter. I don’t see how to get inside it to see what happened. Has anyone had this trouble and have any adivce? Please don’t advise me that I should have bought the industrial free standing type, as I already know I probably should have, but I really use it only once every few months. Thanks.

As you face the machine you will see a roll pin at the top left of the column. Remove the pin and disconnect the gas cylinder and you will be able to pull the head up and off the column. I don't remember if they use a pin or setscrew to secure the pinion gear to the shaft but you will be able to see it easily once you have the head off.

Did you get it fixed?

Actually, I got the mortiser head off the column and can visualize the gear. There is a set screw that already seems to be tightened, but yet the arm still keeps slipping. I am not sure what else to do to fix it. Is there some sort of groove that the set screw should go into? Perhaps it is not aligned and the set screw is sliding on the shaft. I kind of got frustrated and cut the rest of my mortises for this project by hand, the old fashioned way. Any further advice welcome. Thanks for following up.
