I’m considering a Delta 46-224 lathe (used). Does anyone know if this particular model has the capability to add a faceplate to the outboard side of the spindle for bowl turning?

Looking at the exploded view I can't be sure, but I don't think it will tale an outboard faceplate.

I'm not aware of any lathe that allows for the outboard mounting of a faceplate. Look for one with a rotating headstock of you want to turn bowls larger than the clearance between the ways and the spindle. My Delta 46-715 has a rotating headstock, but the problem is getting the tool rest in front of it at 90 degrees. I believe Jet makes a lathe that allows the headstock to be moved all the way to he right end of the lathe.

Some Delta lathes had provisions for mounting a faceplate on the outboard side of the headstock. Delta also offered a standalone tool rest pedestal.

I learn something knew everyday. Thanks. I could use one of those stand alone tool rests.

I don't think Delta offers one anymore but Jet has a pretty nice one you can see here.

That is cool, but I don't think I can justify paying more for the stand than I paid for my lathe. Thanks.

They are very proud of it! The cheapest I have seen it is at CpoJet for $299. A lot of people make their own with a truck brake drum, some pipe and cement.

I'm pretty sure that it does--notice the threads on both ends of the arbor in the diagram. Many of the 1" dia.-8 tpi threaded faceplates made for Delta lathes were/are threaded to work both ways, forward and reverse, so as to be threaded in the proper direction for use on the outboard end of the spindle.
I made my own tool rest for outboard turning. Lot's of ways to accomplish that--just be sure to make it sturdy.
It might work. Although I haven't pulled it out to find the model plate, my Delta lathe is of about the same vintage. There's about an inch of threaded arbor extending beyond the outboard retaining nut.
