I’ve had a problem with this particular planer for many years now, and wonder if anyone out there has a similar experience or might be able to offer some insight.
My blades suffer two nicks, towards the left side of the blades, about 2″ apart. The nicks appear every time I install new blades. I’ve closely examined the area with mirrors, rotating the drum, etc., and taken the machine apart, all to no avail — it’s a mystery to me.

That's really odd. Have you tried moving one of the knives over a small amount to see if it happens again?
Actually, I haven't. But only because when I've put new knives in, the nicks appear in exactly the same two spots. I figure the knives must be hitting something, but for the life of me, I can't see any obstructions. I've just lived with it, but of course, it affects the performance of the machine.
It's striking something because both blades are nicked in the same spots. Just wondered if anyone had experienced this phenomenon.

I never experienced what you're describing although I had one of those for quite a while. I upgraded to a Dewalt 13" a few years ago when the Delta finally croaked.
Based on what you're saying, it can't be something you can see happening when turning the head by hand. I'd look for something that may be hanging in the general vicinity that is pulled into it when it turns on. It's weird that it hits in the exact same spots every time, though. And how can it be hard enough to nick the blade but you can't see it?!
Have you contacted Delta service? I found them extremely helpful when I've had problems in the past.

Kell, I'll call Delta -- don't know why I didn't think of that before.
