Does anyone know the outside diameter of the spindle for the 14″ lathe??? I know the threads are 1″X8 tpi but is the rest of the spindle 1″ as well???
I have an old craftsman lathe made by Clausing that has a 3/4″ spindle that has no threads and has a #1 MT. removing the spindle bushings leaves me with 1″ openings in the lathe head. I would like to buy a delta spindle for $24.00 and then 1″ bore flange block bearings to mount on the outside of the head.
thanks

But the spindle, take it with you to a place that sells bearings ( look in the yellow pages for Power Transmission). Buy new bearings , the old lathe probably needs it anyhow. The spindle is probably a bit smaller than 1", I bought a 1x8 spindle from Grizzly when I built my lathe. The spindle was 25 millimeters I believe, slightly under 1". I took the spindle with me and bought the correct bearings for it.

Thanks for the input. You answered my question, that the spindle diameter is 25mm, just under 1". I had looked at both the Delta & Grizzley spindles but could not get any answer from either companies tech services. I will order from Grizzley now that you have provided me with the info. My old craftsman has bronze bushings so I will pull them out, get new flange block bearings to attach to the outside of the head. Rick emailed me that http://WWW.surpluscenter.com had good deals on flange bearings. With your help & Rick's I may actually pull this off.
Buy the bearings from a nearby dealer if possible. If not, Enco and Mcmaster Carr are two reputable online supply houses.I do not think SurplusCenter carries bearings in 25 millimeters. If I recall correctly I paid about $35.00 each for two heavy duty pillow block bearings from a local supply house.

Surplus center does list a 35 mm pillow block. It's a hit and miss thing based on surplus. When they have it the prices are great. wwwbearingbrokersinc.com has good prices and a good selection. I bought $250 bearings for our moulder for 1/2 list price and they were the same name brand bearing.
two questions on your 1"X8tpi, probably from the G5979 or G0584 model, spindle you got from Grizzley.
First, there does not appear to be any threads for outboard turning on this spindle, assume you did not want that function. the 1"x12 tpi spindle form the G1495 parts layout looks like the one above but the catalog says there is a 7/8"x 16 tpi/LH threads for outboard turning. I don't see it on the parts layout but still looking.
second, there appears to be a bearing already on the spindle and part of the spindle. whats that for?? The parts layout shows another bearing that goes right behind this preexisting bearing.
Had you thought to buy the grizzley bearings that fit their spindle and then use flange ets (not sure how you spell that) to mount them???
I have gotten fine woodworking since day 1 and have looked at the 2 build your own lathe articles. These articles gave me the inspiration to try and modify my old lathe that has such a nice havy cast iron bed.
The Grizzly headstock spindle has no outboard turning threads.Only the 1x8 threads and a #2 morse taper. The tailstock spindle is also a morse taper #2 and bothe spindles have a hollow clear thru for a knockout bar. I use a length of 1/4" diameter cold rolled steel fitted with a handle for the knouckout bar.
I forgot to mention that getting a cone pulley in 25 millimeters is an expensive proposition. I couldn't find one locally or online. Grizzly uses a variable sheath type that I am not familiar with. A 4 step pulley with a smaller bore costs about $35.00, machine shops wanted as much as $40.00 to bore it out. I figured I could easily make the pulley myself. I glued up four pieces of 4/4 maple, bored for 15/16" which is the equivalent of 25 millimeters. I bandsawed them to a circle first. Glued them up right on the spindle. I installed a 1/4x20 threaded bushing in the smallest pulley, used a 1/4x20 cap screw with an allen head to tighten the pulley on the spindle. I found that just placing the belt ( I used a link belt ) over the pulley without the V grooves, worked good enough for me to finish rounding the pulley and cutting the V groove right on the lathe.Works great, been using the lathe for about 4 years now ,sometimes every day for several weeks. The wooden pulley works very well, at first I thought it would be a decent subsitute until I got a machined pulley, don't want a machined pulley.
I just reread your post, there is no bearing on the spindle I got.Call Grizzly and ask for a tech that is familiar with their lathes. You could e-mail them, but when you order replacement parts it must be phoned in.I tried to order parts by e-mail, no dice, parts are by phone only.Actually any company that makes lathes will sell replacement parts,Delta, jet, oneway, etc.
