The Best wood for beer hall tables. . . discussion was deleted.
Insulting and bigoted posts (and screen names) are not permitted in Knots. For more information read our house rules: http://www.taunton.com/thetauntonpress/forums_hr.asp
The person who made the offending post was told that he/she must find an appropriate screen name if they would like to participate in woodworking discussions on Knots.

Thanks. Might I suggest that Taunton/FWW have new members submit their screen names for approval to stop this nonsense in the future? This sort of thing has not been a problem, but in light of the hope and promise we've witnessed today in our new president, it's a shame to give a knuckle-dragging goof a forum in which to express their views. I'm grateful to the two Knots members who very appropriately took this person to task. Tom
Hi Tom,
That's a good suggestion but hopefully it won't get to that point. As you mentioned, Knots members do a good job of helping with policing and taking people to task when needed.
Thanks to all for the assistance.

how is saying, you wouldn't spit down someones arse hole, taking someone to task? Is that not just as offensive as the "screen name"

At least as much. It is just not as P.C.
One is bigoted and racist, the other is a response to bigotry and racism. Do you truly not see the difference?

Hatred is Hatred my friend.
All that's necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing. If you embrace those who advocate racism you are no friend of mine.

I am not embracing racism, I am stating that the comment you made is no more appropriate than the screen name that is in question. Adding a different kind of fuel to a fire is still fueling a fire. Perhaps the best thing to do is let a fire die. With that comment, I shall now practice what I preach.

Not even close.
Tom.
Great, you want more of "big Brother" in whatever form approving how we live our lives. You must support censorship when YOU agree with it.
I'm glad you view it as "the light of hope" but remember 47% of us voted the other way and may just see it a bit different.

Granted, my memory isn't perfect, but I have to say that in many years on Knots, this is the first time I know of this particular situation (1st post = serious violation). IMHO, it's overkill to respond to this incident with such a major change in process of registering and posting. Not to mention the additional nitpicky work for Sysop.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Agreed. After thinking about the few incidents of abuse, the present system is fine. It's nice to know 'Big Sister' is reading and is looking out for the enjoyment of the users. Knots is a great resource. Tom"Notice that at no time do my fingers leave my hand"
All things considered I think we do a pretty Fine job of policing ourselves for the most part.

I thankfully didn't see the post, but I feel compelled to support the concept of a firm hand in keeping things civil. I've abandoned a couple of forums when the moderators didn't keep things under control. Life is too short to expose yourself to nonsense and hate. I don't know who first said it, but... "Never mud wrestle with a pig. You'll both get dirty and the pig will enjoy it."
Censorship is OK in private forums such as this one. Government censorship is another matter.
Peace....
