I recently found that some “liquid” (loved that old cat, but she couldn’t find her litter box towards the end) long ago became trapped under a rubber mat that was supposed to protect our urethane coated red oak floor from any moisture that might weep from a large potted plant dish. The result is a large dark circle, where the moisture apparently got under the finish via the seams between the boards.
Is there anything short of refinishing that might get rid of the dark mark?

Hi Samson
I am sorry, but the stain is in the wood. Maybe someone else will be able to help differently, but the method to remove the stain that I am comfortable with is with Oxalic acid, applied directly to the bare wood. Good luck, JL
Yeah, I figured it was long shot, Jean Louis, but I thought I'd ask as I've learned so many things here at Knots that I never would have expected or intuited.
Hope you are well.

Now, what are you going to do about the cat? :-) JL
She's gone to kitty heaven, JL.
Interesting after story though. A few days after her passing, we came home one evening to find a small gray mouse expired right in the middle of our bedroom floor. Up to that point, in nearly a decade we'd never seen a mouse (dead or alive) anywhere in our house. We took it as a gift from Samantha (the cat) letting us know she'd had a good life with us (18+ years) and was in a better place.

As a previous owner (or did they own me?) of many cats and a few dogs, I feel the emotion...but when you discovered the effects of the kitty pee, I am sure there were some thoughts in your mind that were not as generous. JL
Actually, I want to send this to Matt Berger, but can not find a way...to let him know that messages remain tagged "unread" even when they have been responded to. He probably already knows. I hope he sees this post. JL

You know, I wasn't particularly upset. More amused. It's in a place that will make it easy to conceal with a piece of furniture of rug if I decide not to refinish right away. And like my mother says at times: "Kids and pets; they ruin your stuff, but they're worth it."

You are speaking from a place of love, and those we love can do anything and still we are amused...most of the time. :-) JL

Ditto what the other reply said. Sand it to bare wood, then bleach it with oxalic acid. Let dry for a few days at least. Then do whatever is needed to match the old color/finish.
Support our Troops. Bring them home. Now. And pray that at least some of the buildings in the green zone have flat roofs, with a stairway.
