cutting small discs (circles) from 1/4″ plywood
I need to cut 60 1/4″ thick 3″ diameter circles for a school project for my son. I own a drill press and bandsaw but not a lathe. I’ve narrowed down my options to three:
1. Use a hole saw in the drill press, 1/4″ plywood, and pry-out each circle (concerned about tear-out, ragged edges, and difficulty of prying out the discs).
2. Buy a 3″ diameter solid wood post (from where?) and slice it up into circles on the bandsaw.
3. Buy a fly cutter and cut the circles on the drill press from 1/4″ plywood (heard they are dangerous and slow).
Suggestions? Other options?
Thanks,
Lyptus

If the project requires an axle hole, a good quality hole saw would work well. Most will also allow the center drill to be removed if you don't want the hole. Just be sure the stock is clamped well and that you have a backer board. A more production-oriented approach would be to cut over-sized squares on a table saw, and make a jig that would hold the squares on three sides for hole-sawing at the DP.
Personally, I don't like fly cutters, even though many have used them with success.
