I’m looking for a better way to rough out wood for bowl turning. I sometimes turn 20-24″ bowls , which are roughed out on the band saw, prior to turning. Presently , I find the center on the log and add a plywood circle screwed to the bottom. The plywood has a center hole thats put on a pivot, and turned around to get the diameter needed.
It’s difficult to get the blade started and the pivot is on a seperate stand , which makes the hard to handle a large piece of wood. There has to be a better way to do this any any help would be appreciated.

Could you make a table top that covers your BS top and has the separate stand integrated into it for support ?

dusty,
I was thinking along the same lines but more like a sled (In this case maybe sacrificial) that could be quided via the miter slot, to start the cut. Then once the initial cut was made you could then pivot the stock on an embedded pin in the top to get the cylinder. Might need a supporting carriage of some sort alongside the BS.
I may be daft about this, Bob @ Kidderville Acres
