I want to make a wooden planter barrel for my garden. I would like it to look something like the 1/2 whiskey barrels sold for gardening and to be about that size. I’m not sure how to cut the sides so that the barrel sides will be angled outwards, making a larger opening at the top than at the bottom. It is easy enough to figure the angle of cut for vertical side pieces. How do you figure the angles for side pieces (staves?) that rise at greater than 90 degrees?

I'm assuming your sides will be straight, not curved like an actual barrel.
You need a compound miter calculator like this one: http://www.pdxtex.com/canoe/compound.htm
The more sides you enter in, the more it will approach round.

By coincidence, I am a Rev. also. Greetings!
Thank you for this information. I looked at the site. It looks like the answer. I'll ask my math teacher wife to help me decode. That will save some lumber.
Blessings,
