Hi-
I’m building my first custom kitchen and I’m looking for a few recommendations/feedback…
1. Draw sliders/Euro hinges. Blum and Accuride seems to be the ‘standard’. Any other brands to consider? (I’m sometimes skeptical of top brands premium price… although Apple is a good example where premium price really does buy a great product) I’m looking for the soft close style. Where do you get the best prices?
2. Draw/door fronts & draw boxes – I’m 95% decided to have these made. I don’t really have the equipment to make them well and consistent. Any recommendations on vendors? I’ve spoken to a rep at Conestoga. They seem to have a lot of options.
3. I’m also looking at Lytpus for the face frames, end panels, door/draw fronts, etc. Have you worked with it? It’s an alternative to mahogany.
Thanks,
-Steve

I build custom kitchens, some customized from stock cabinets, some built entirely from scratch. I really like accuride drawer slides, have no particular favorites in the Euro-hinges. I buy most of my hardware from McMaster-Carr,

I usually build frameless cabinets, but that obviously depends on what the client wants. I get my drawers made by a company in North Carolina whose name I can't bring to mind, but I'll look it up at the office tomorrow if you're interested
Let me know if I can be of any further help.

Thanks for your reply. I'm definitely interested in the company you use.
Steve,
The drawer company I use is Valen Drawers, http://www.valendrawers.com/ , and I also use Outwater hardware, http://www.outwaterhardware.com/ , more than McMaster-Carr, I vegged out a little on that one. Have fun.

I built a bookcase of Lyptus and have prefinished Lyptus flooring. It's pretty hard stuff, lots of tiny splinters in your fingers. Seems stable.
The bookcase is stained to match other furniture, Mahogany or cherry, I forget, and the floor is natural. And no, those pink slippers in the corner are not mine!

The bookcase looks really great. Thanks for your post!
did you read the article in FWW a month ago that reviewed the slide options? I finally tried some Accuride undermounts and they are great. The jig to install is pretty darn handy too. They will add a considerable amount of $$ to a custom kitchen, but I suppose you have a fussy client that is willing to pay.

Thanks for pointing me to the article, it's very helpful.
I was 'forced' to build kitchen cabinets over 5 years ago, my house was built in the WWII era and there is nothing standard about this house... one of the quotes for cabinets was “we might be able to do that for under $50K”…
I built faceless cases out maple ply.
I used Blum Clip-top 120 hinges and added the blu-motion dampers.
Used KV slides, and am pleased with them they are smooth and quiet. My only regret in the entire kitchen is that I did not pay the premium for self closing slides, at the time they were scarce and nearly double the cost… I have considered replacing them but just never got around to it.
I've only done one full kitchen (other, idividual cabs before), but I put a lot of work and study into it and got a fair price for a mid to high end job. I love the Blum tandem slides and highly recommend them as being worth every penny. Accurides (ball bearing, side mounted) made me feel like I was just bad at installing hardware. I have mainly used no mortise butt hinges so far, but I don't really like them after about 30 flush doors. I think the cup hinges would be a lot stronger and have a more positive action. As to your not being equipped to turn out sturdy drawers, have you considered something besides the doevetail? There are other options that are 'sturdy' for kitchen cabinets and should need only a tablesaw and maybe a pocket srew setup.

I used the Blum Tandem system for all my drawer slides, would definitely chose them again. Expensive but you don't see any of the hardware when it's installed and the performance is outstanding. Self closing and very smooth and quiet.
