Does anyone have any ideas on how to “pop” the color in curly cherry? An oil fnish merely seems to muddy the colors.

I'm not sure what "pop" the color on cherry means, but I have excellent luck by appling an shellac and alcohol blend before staining. Allow the shellac coat to dry overnight and sand lightly with fine (220p) paper. The stain goes on evenly, without the darkening of grain that nears being perpendicular to the surface.
I guess I'm looking for a way to get better definition of the color variations in the wood. With oil, they seem to blend together & I'd like them to be more defined. Thanks for your input.
