I’m replacing our cabinet doors and would like to replace the variable overlay hinges (visible) with concealed European hinges. Is there a problem or risk with installing cup hinges that screw into the edge of the face frame? On a recent trip to Rockler I noticed that Blum makes a Compact 33 cup hinge with a face frame mounting plate, however they are more expensive and I know there are internet discounts for the cup hinges comparable to Blum that screw into the Edge of the plywood rather than the plywood face of the face frame. Our cabinets are 30 years old but the 3/4″ plywood doesn’t have voids and appears solid. Also, we are going to paint the plywood and new doors but I’m concerned about wearing or splitting the screwed edges from cycling the doors.

If your cabinet doors have any kind of a beveled edge, do a mockup before you drill a hinge cup. It's very easy to dril thru the bevel and leave part of the cup exposed.
The only other issue will be the screw holes in the faceframe. They're hard to hide.
Hi Dave ,
Now I won't ask why you know how easy it is to bore thru the edge detail .

Yo, Dusty -Didn't someone else ask about this a few months ago? - lol
I don't really care for that hinge it makes the door stick out from the faceframe pretty far. I prefer using a regular cup hinge and a faceframe mount.

The first link is for a full overlay but they carry ones to fit other ones
I find these easier to use and more adjustability

The first link was evidently a bad site/link because I had some virus warnings, but I was able to open the 2nd link. One the second link, could you help me figure out which mounting plate that I need? I'm having trouble picturing these hinge plates and where they will go on the face of the face frames.
Sorry about the bad link.
What I think you want to look at is the " clip base plates for face farme cabinets"
click on one of the base plates and there are a couple of PDF's that are kinda helpful
they are under product specs, one is base plates and the other is general. The charts you want to look at are in the general PDF
The basic idea is that the base plate comes in three heights 0mm 3mm and 6mm which translates to an overlay of between 17mm and 8mm (about 5/16 to 11/16) depending on where you drill the cup hole and other factors.
Euro hinges can be very confusing at first because the charts blum puts out are a kinda hard to understand at first but they do have the info you need once you figure out their system.
