I am involved in a remodel project and am now down to installing crown molding. I purchased a Foley Belsaw model 985 Planer/Molder at an auction a few months ago so that I could mill my own molding. The pattern knives I am planning on using produce 11/16″ X 4 5/8″ molding, and I am planning on painting the molding white. Because I am painting the molding I would like to use as inexpensive wood as possible (poplar, pine, etc.) My problem is where do I get it. The place I normally buy my wood only carries oak, walnut, cherry, and plywood. Big Box stores either don’t carry (poplar) or the quality sucks (pine) so that doesn’t appear to be an option. I live in the Wichita Kansas area so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Big box stores usually do carry poplar, but the prices are nothing to write home about. How much do you need? There are any number of wood suppliers around the country. A quick search using http://www.woodfinder.com/ turned up this one near Topeka:
