Craftsman Wood Lathe bearings?
I have a Craftsman 15″ wood lathe, that in general has been very good to me. However, yesterday the back bearing started to make noise. It is still turning fine but the noise is hard to ignore. Is there anything I can do beside replace the bearings? This looks like a huge job, the motor and spindle are all located together in the head unit.

Do you have oil cups that you add oil to to lube the bearings or are they sealed cartridge type that you just use?
If the latter you can pry the rubber side off the bearing; maybe; if you can get to it.
The side is a sheet metal disc covered in rubber with a thin rubber lip that fits into a groove all the way around the edge of the bearing case. You can take a thin small screw driver or use an awl and poke up into the bearing at the outer rim and pry this side off. Rub appropriate grease (lighter is probably better than thick and stiff; this isn't a barge or earth moving equipment) into the bearing retainer and push the side back into the bearing.
I assume this is a belt drive lathe. I have had noise coming from the lathe that sounded like the bearings but turned out to be a loose belt and tensioner part that was clunking around. I tensioned and tightened it all up nice and no more noise.
good luck and let me know how she goes.

Pheasant,
Let us see a picture of the innards of this lathe-it cannot be too complicated. Once ball bearings make noise it means they are history so you will need to change them sooner or later. Getting more grease or oil into noisy bearings is just postponing the day. Try squirting wd 40 or a penetrating oil .
The bearing that I thought was making noise was not the issue. It was an exposed bearing that is part of the variable speed system on this lathe. Once I took the pressuse of the bearing all the 'balls' fell out. Looks like it got to hot. I just placed my order with sears parts for the $11 bearing.
No big deal, just don't have a lathe for a week or two. Thanks for the offer to help.
