Craftsman Professional planer blades…
Hello.
This is my first post to ‘Knots’ and I am seeking advice.
Last week, I bought a used Craftsman Professional planer(Model 351.217430)
that appears to be in really good shape.
On the test voyage, ran a couple of rough pieces through and
had a little bit of pull out on the pine, also on the hardwood.
I looked in the manual to see if the blades can be resharpened, but
found no info, except how to change them out.
Do any of you seasoned woodworkers, have this model, and if so,
do you know if the blades are resharpenable?
Thanks in advance,
Frodobuilder

I don't have it, but typically if the knives can be resharpened the manual will discuss how to set the height after you install the knives. If the knives can't be resharpened, usually there are pins or slides, or other stops so that when they are reinstalled the height is automatically set and there is no adjustment.
FrodoB, if those blades are indexed with pins and double-edged, they probably aren't meant to be sharpened, rather they're considered to be "disposable." I read an article ages ago about why it doesn't work to sharpen these, had something to do with the way the geometry works on the indexed blades.
They can be shifted a tad right or left if you're coping with nicks that leave a tiny bead on the wood. But if they're dull, they're dull, and need to be turned over to a new edge, or replaced. Be sure you're not taking a cut that's too heavy, that'll cause tear-out too.
