I need cordless reciprocating saw to trim some Ponderosa Pines from ground level to about 8′ above the ground. Does anyone have any recommendations, either positive or negative?

I have a Ridgid saw that I like but I haven't owned or used most of the other brands to be able to say if they are better or worse. You should go to our sister site for Fine Homebuilding Magazine, and check there for both tool reviews and to ask on their Breaktime discussion board.
As an alternative I would suggest that you look at the Ryobi cordless chain saw, part of their One+ series of tools which are well made and nicely designed. I have been using the Ryobi chain saw to clear hundreds of trees from a very steep hillside below my house and found it to be a real workhorse despite it's small size. You'll need at least three battery packs so you can keep swap them out, and to allow the spares to cool off and charge as you work. You can get a charger that plugs into you car's cigarette lighter, a real convenience if you aren't near the house.
Be aware that the new battery packs you get with any tool won't take a full charge for the first three or four times you charge them, so you'll have to switch the batteries out more often the first time out.
