I use a backing block for copes. I cut the copes first, before cutting the bead and groove. If there is any blow out, the bead cut removes it. The important part of using a block is having a zero clearance fence around the cutter, otherwise the piece may be pulled into the cutters.
You can use a sled if the opening on the fence is wide or the work piece is too large to handle without a clamp. It takes some extra set up to make sure the sled travels in line with the fence, the backing piece doesn't get worn, the sled doesn't hit the cutters and the work lays flat on the table.
Beat it to fit / Paint it to match
