Can anyone remind me the FWW or FHB issue in which contractor’s table saws were reviewed? I want to buy one.
Thanks

I believe it was in the Tools & Shops issue that came out in December.

The "Tools and Shops" issue was pretty hoaky. There was a lot of gritching about it on-line. Would suggest looking at more than that one "review" if possible.

Are you sure the "gritching" was about the Tools and Shops issue and not instead the Tool Guide?

I'll add my two cents about the tool's guide. I'm just glad it was only $10.
Oooops, I stand corrected. You are aboslutely right!forestgirl Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>) you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
The "Tools and Shops" issue was brilliant. It told me exactly what I wanted to hear...that the GI 50-185M1 was the best contractor saw in the pack!. (LOL) It's now considered the single most important literary work of this century. It resides on our coffee table right next to the Bible.
;)
Scotty,
Bad news....the intelligence for that "Tools" issue came from the CIA/FBI report..."Tools for Mass Construction" I suggest you slide that bible to the other end of the coffee table....lol
So what is the best table saw?
Alan - planesaw
Hi Alan - Killer question.....there's really no correct answer. The best TS is the one that fits your budget that best suits your needs. It depends alot on who you ask, which magazine you read, or which dealer you visit. Most saws beyond the $400 range have reasonable fences will do a good job spinning a blade with some accuracy. From there, it boils down to features, circumstances, construction materials and design. It's a funny, but most of us who have a decent saw are happy with it and tend to recommend it. You'll rarely hear of someone who bought a new saw who is disappointed...at least early on. Most people who buy a saw are buying one that's better than what they had previously (including no saw). The odds are good that they're more happy to have a new saw than they are with that particular saw. Since their reference is a bit skewed, I tend to take owner's feelings about their saw lightly. Get specific info about about each feature and ask why they feel that feature is better than a competitors.
If your budget is smaller than ~$400, I'd seriously consider buying a good used one. If your budget is more than double that, I'd consider a cabinet saw.
It's best to do alot of research and get familiar with everything in your price range. It's even a good idea to look at a few that are beyond your price range just to get a reference for quality.
Good luck!
Too funny! Dontcha just love "validation"???? ROFL!forestgirl Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>) you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Yeah...I figure I have braggin rights at least until another review unseats it! Most of the saws on that list would have been a welcome addition to my shop a year ago. The GI and have bonded now....it's not going anywhere without me kicking and screaming and hanging on for dear life! (Do women have these relationship issues with their tools?)LOL...
"Do women have these relationship issues with their tools?" -- ROFL! I'm sure a small percentage, of which I am one. My faves are all under lock-and-key, since my hubby is absolute death on tools. Don't know what kind of karma-shortage he was born with, but he has a real knack for breaking them. Good thing he's such a sweetie otherwise!forestgirl Another proud member of the "I Rocked With ToolDoc Club" .... :>) you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
This comes from a beginner but....
I bet that the skill of the person using the saw is far more important than any difference that saw might have with an other model...
If you take a master woodworker and give him the cheapest table saw out there, I am willing to bet he can do a far better job than I could ever dream of with the best table saw.
People sometimes get stuck on technical details when it's really a matter of skill... ;)
